Updating Server

Please excuse the broken web site at this moment, We are moving servers and the site is not completely back up yet. Hopefully middle of the week (26April2006) everything will be back in tact. Then new content will be published.

Thanks for the patience,

NX4 is here

Technically NX 4 was released in December of 2005. Now that we have it in our hot little hands, we can install it on one of our test/development seats.

What can I say, NX4 is the next version of NX and along with that it brings numerous changes, improvements, and new functions.

The first thing you will notice is Roles. It gives you the ability to reduce the menu entries for the specific task your doing, and for the beginner that details and works in the Drafting Application mostly, why confuse the learning curve with operators that would intimidate most people. This is a double edge sword. I would really hope that companies would not force this role, but make it a initial default. So that when people want to learn more they can enable menu operators and continue to discover new techniques and operators.

There is a new palette, called Roles. Simply select a role and the menus will enable or disable.

Starting the applications. Since version 10 of Unigraphics we had a menu option; Application. That is where you would start the Modeling, Drafting, Gateway, all the applications. Well in NX4 that is now located under the START toolbar pull down on the main menu bar. So to get into the Modeling application, you would Start -> Modeling. Under the Start toolbar option is the most commonly used applications and you have a submenu of all the applications.

NX4 Start Applications

Generate a new toolbar interactively. If your formiliar with customizing toolbars, there is a new option; The New button. After you give your new toolbar a name, select the commands tab, navigate to the option you want to add, and drag to your new toolbar. It’s that easy.

In the coming weeks, We will focus on more NX4. There is so much to talk about that is new in NX4 not to mention topics that we have not discussed that is in previous version of NX.

Replace Feature

How to Use the “Replace Feature” function

Imagine a part file has a block with a cylinder united to it. The united cylinder for this example is “blue”, then we will add a block that will call it “green”, the block (green) is not united. When we are done the result will be the block (green) will be united to the original block and the cylinder (blue) will be removed.

Replacing the feature
Select “Replace Feature”
Edit -> Feature -> Replace

  1. Select the body you want to work on
  2. Next step is to select the body you want replace
  3. Now pick what feature you want to replace it with. The block (green) in this case
  4. ok the next dialog
  5. your done

Summary
The finished result is the block (green) replaces the cylinder (blue). The advantage of this is if there was any additionaly child features applied to the original cylinder, it will be associated to the new block (in this case). So if you had a hole it would be in the new feature with the hole having the same face ID. In the master model concept child operations depending on the face ID would not need to be re-associated. Example would be a CAM process associated to the hole. Update it and it’s done.

Undo a file save (teamcenter)

What if you save your part while in Teamcenter, can you undo it?

Yes (usually), By default Teamcenter saves the last 3 versions of every file. You can change this individually on each dataset by selecting properties on that dataset then changing the Version Limit. What this does for you is every time you save a file there are the Version Limit number preserved. As you save, the oldest is removed and the latest one is added.

Find old versions, Do a search. Set your query options so that “Latest dataset versions” is unset. This option is in the search dialog on the lower right corner, under the query options (tab). Type in the name, and any other filter information and search. The return search query will be a list of the datasets with a datasetName;n where n will the previous saved version file.

Teamcenter Engineering Search saved versions of datasets

Open the old version and make it current. Close all the parts in the current NX session or the editor for that file dataset if it’s not a NX file. Double click on the datasetName;n and verify it is the version you want to save. Save it and now the latest version is this file.
